MTD thresholds explained (2026–2028) for UK taxi drivers

By Paul Taylor 3 min read

If you are asking “Do I need MTD?”, the honest answer is: maybe not today - but probably soon. HMRC is phasing in MTD for Income Tax by self-employed income, not by whether you “feel” full-time.

The phased thresholds (UK)

HMRC’s public roadmap (always double-check current guidance) is:

  • From April 2026: MTD applies from over £50,000 qualifying self-employed income
  • From April 2027: over £30,000
  • From April 2028: over £20,000

If you are near a threshold, do not treat it like a cliff you can “surf” with clever accounting. Treat it like a compliance window you should prepare for early.

What “income” usually means here (drivers)

For threshold tests, think self-employed turnover/income in HMRC’s sense - before expenses - not your profit after fuel and commission.

Practical examples drivers misunderstand:

  • App payouts (Uber, Bolt, etc.) count in the turnover story
  • Cash jobs count
  • Tips can count depending on how they are received and recorded
  • Other driving income (school runs, subcontracting) can count if it is self-employed

Your tax is still calculated on profit (income minus allowable expenses). But whether you must join MTD is driven by the income threshold rules, not by “what I felt I made after diesel”.

A simple numeric example

If your self-employed driving turnover is £52,000 in a tax year and HMRC’s rules place you above the April 2026 threshold, you should assume MTD quarterly reporting is in play for that regime - even if your profit after costs is much lower.

Edge cases that trip people up

  • Multiple income streams: other self-employment can stack into the same picture - do not only look at “Uber only”.
  • Volatile years: a strong year can push you over even if the next year drops.
  • Starting/stopping: if you ramp up mid-year, do not wait until January to discover you crossed a line in July.

If quarterly updates are new to you, read how MTD quarterly updates work for drivers next.

Record-keeping is the other half of the threshold story: what records taxi drivers need for MTD.

Next steps

  1. Read the pillar guide: MTD software for taxi drivers - it ties thresholds, software, and penalties into one place.
  2. Pair this topic with how MTD quarterly updates work for drivers and what records taxi drivers need for MTD.
  3. Start your free trial and track turnover and profit weekly so threshold surprises disappear.
