How MTD quarterly updates work (for UK taxi drivers)

How MTD quarterly updates work (for UK taxi drivers)

By Paul Taylor 3 min read

Quarterly updates sound scary until you translate them into normal language: HMRC wants periodic digital check-ins, not four full “tax returns” a year.

If you are in scope, the goal is to stop the annual archaeology project and replace part of it with structured updates from compatible software.

What “quarterly updates” actually means

In MTD for Income Tax, eligible self-employed people are expected to submit updates every three months (four per year), based on digital records kept in software that meets HMRC’s functional compatibility rules.

What you are submitting is essentially: here is what my business did this quarter - income and expenses in HMRC-readable categories - not a brand new narrative essay.

What you submit (conceptually)

Think in four buckets HMRC cares about:

  • Income (fares, app payouts, cash work - as applicable)
  • Expenses (fuel/mileage, commission, insurance, repairs, licences - as applicable)
  • Dates (when money moved)
  • Categories (so HMRC systems can aggregate consistently)

You are not trying to “pre-pay exact tax” each quarter in your head. You are keeping the digital trail coherent so year-end and compliance checks do not rely on reconstruction.

Timeline mental model (Q1–Q4)

Most drivers should ignore clever calendar tricks and adopt a boring rule:

  • Weekly capture (10 minutes) beats quarterly panic (10 hours)

If you want the threshold context for when this becomes mandatory for you, read MTD thresholds explained (2026–2028).

Common confusion: quarterly updates vs “final tax”

Quarterly updates are not a replacement for understanding your profit. They are a reporting rhythm.

You still need a coherent year story - MTD changes how pieces are submitted, not the underlying idea that tax is based on profit after allowable costs.

If you are unsure how this interacts with Self Assessment habits, read MTD vs Self Assessment: what changes for drivers.

Where TaxiManager fits (without the fluff)

If the bottleneck is “I do not want to become a part-time tax clerk”, that is exactly why products like TaxiManager exist: driver-shaped categories, phone-first logging, and an compliance posture aimed at quarterly-ready records.

HMRC publishes guidance on finding compatible software: see Find software that’s compatible with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (official).
