Who is affected?

Do taxi drivers need MTD? Yes - and more every year.

HMRC is rolling MTD out in phases:

  • £50,000+

    From April 2026

First mandatory phase for qualifying self-employed income.

  • £30,000+

    From April 2027

    Threshold drops a year later.

  • £20,000+

    From April 2028

Lowest threshold in the phased rollout.

Most taxi drivers will be included - including most Uber drivers on Self Assessment.

Why MTD exists

Why HMRC is introducing Making Tax Digital

HMRC is moving the UK tax system fully digital - to reduce errors, increase transparency, and make reporting more frequent.

  • Too many self-employed people submit incorrect or incomplete records
  • HMRC estimates billions are lost each year due to reporting errors
  • Annual tax returns often lead to last-minute corrections and missed deadlines
  • MTD forces a shift to real-time, accurate digital reporting

This isn't optional - it's a long-term change to how tax works in the UK.

What changes

MTD means no more paper records - and no missed deadlines

To stay compliant, you must:

  • Keep digital records of income and expenses
  • Submit quarterly updates to HMRC
  • Submit a final declaration via software
  • Keep records in an HMRC-compatible format

No spreadsheets. No shoebox receipts. No last-minute panic.

Looking for general taxi accounting software (income, expenses, profit) rather than MTD rules? Start with taxi driver accounting software (UK). If you work mostly with Uber payouts, see also Uber driver accounting software (UK). That weekly discipline is what makes MTD-ready tools usable in real life, not just on paper.

Penalties

Ignoring MTD can cost you thousands

If you don’t comply, HMRC penalties add up fast:

  • Up to £3,000 per quarter for incorrect or missing records
  • Financial penalties for late submissions
  • Increased risk of HMRC audits
  • Interest on unpaid tax
  • Errors that affect tax credits and benefits - wrong figures can hit your tax credits and housing benefit claims

The longer you wait, the higher the risk.

Rules and amounts can change

Penalty rules and figures can change. Always check current HMRC guidance and your accountant before acting on specific amounts.

FAQ

FAQ - Making Tax Digital for taxi drivers

Do taxi drivers need to use MTD in the UK?

Yes - if your self-employed income is above the HMRC threshold. From April 2026, drivers earning over £50,000 must follow MTD. The threshold drops to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. This includes most drivers working through Uber and other private hire platforms.

What counts as income for MTD?

Your total self-employed turnover before expenses. This includes Uber payments, cash jobs, tips and any other driving income. The threshold is based on income, but your tax is based on profit after allowable expenses.

Do I need MTD if I earn under £50,000?

Not yet for 2026. The threshold is dropping to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028, so most drivers will be included sooner or later.

What do I actually have to do under MTD?

You must:

  • keep digital records of income and expenses
  • submit updates every 3 months
  • send a final declaration at year-end

All of this must be done using software compatible with HMRC MTD requirements.

How often do I need to submit updates?

Every quarter - four updates per year, plus a final declaration. Missing submissions can trigger penalties under HM Revenue and Customs rules.

What happens if I don't follow MTD?

You may receive penalty points, financial penalties can apply, and your records may be considered non-compliant. The exact impact depends on what is missing - records versus submissions.

Do I still need to do Self Assessment?

Yes - but it changes. MTD replaces parts of the process with quarterly updates and a final declaration instead of a traditional return. The responsibility remains; the format changes.

Do Uber drivers need different MTD rules?

No. Drivers using Uber follow the same MTD rules as any self-employed person. The only difference is how you track your income and expenses.

When should I start preparing for MTD?

Now.

Even if you're below the threshold, building digital records early means:

  • no stress when MTD becomes mandatory
  • clean data from the start
  • no last-minute transition
What records do I need for MTD?

You need structured digital records of:

  • income
  • expenses
  • dates
  • categories

Typical driver records include:

  • trip income
  • fuel or mileage
  • commission
  • insurance
  • licence fees

Start tracking your records digitally now - and stay ready for MTD before the first deadline hits.
